Jennifer LaPlante
Chief Growth & Investment Officer, Canada's Ocean Supercluster

Jennifer LaPlante is the Chief Growth & Investment Officer for Canada’s Ocean Supercluster, providing strategic growth and oversight of OSC’s investment portfolio. Jennifer’s career has been focused on data, analytics and technology.

As the Executive Director of DeepSense, she drove economic growth through increased comprehension and adoption of artificial intelligence and machine learning in Canada’s ocean sector. She holds an MBA and an MSc in Computing and Data Analytics. Jennifer is a member of the Public Awareness Working Group under the Government of Canada Advisory Council on AI and is a co-organizer of the Halifax Chapter of Women in Machine Learning and Data Science (WiMLDS).



 

Dr. Sue Molloy, P.Eng., FCAE
CEO, Glas Ocean Electric

Dr. Sue Molloy holds a PhD in Naval Architectural and Ocean Engineering (Memorial University) and is the CEO of Glas Ocean Electric (GOE), a Nova Scotia-based company using their electric propulsion and AI-enabled navigation systems to reduce maritime carbon emissions. Sue and her team won the Lieutenant Governor’s award for Excellence in Engineering.  

Sue is a Chair of the board for the Council of Canadian Academies, elected Vice President of the Engineers Nova Scotia Council and past co-chair for Canada’s Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council Discovery Grant program.  

Sue’s professional service work includes being an active reviewer for the US Department of Energy and national Canadian Government programs, serving as Canadian Chair of ISO TC 8, Ships and Marine Technology and as the international convenor for the IEC committee focused on river turbine performance. In 2022 Sue was elected as a fellow to the Canadian Academy of Engineering.  

Prior to GOE, Sue was president and general manager of Black Rock Tidal Power (a subsidiary of Schottel GmbH). Sue teaches about sustainable energy and related marine topics at Dalhousie University in Halifax. 


Jean Quirion
VP Research and Development, Innovasea

Jean is currently leading Innovasea’s Fish Tracking Research and Development (R&D) team. As part of OceanAware, a $29M R&D program co-funded by Canada’s Ocean Supercluster, Jean built a team of AI and Machine Learning engineers at Innovasea, as well as engaged with key AI academic partners, to develop Innovasea’s Tagless Fish Tracking system which is based on AI and computer vision and capable to automatically detecting fish and classifying their species in real-time around hydropower facilities. 
 
Jean has been working in the private technology sector for 25 years across different industries, automotive, defense, and now ocean tech. In 2013, with his contribution to many growth-generating products and innovations, he received the IEEE Canadian Atlantic Section (CAS) Young Innovator Award. Jean is also co-inventor on several patents, and co-author of multiple scientific publications related to engineering systems and most recently AI techniques for fish tracking. Jean holds an MSc in Electrical Engineering from Dalhousie University and a P.Eng. designation from the Association of Professional Engineers of Nova Scotia.


Dr. Mae Seto, PEng
Associate Professor, Dalhousie University

Dr. Seto worked in private industry (ISE Research Ltd., Pt. Coquitlam, Canada) for six years on research and development projects related to autonomous underwater vehicles. Then, Dr. Seto moved to Nova Scotia to work as a defence scientist for Defence R&D Canada. She joined the Dalhousie Department of Mechanical Engineering as an Associate Professor in 2017. Dr. Seto is registered in Nova Scotia as a Professional Engineer (PEng).
