Conversation with the Leaders
In anticipation of Nova Scotia’s upcoming provincial election, the Halifax Chamber of Commerce will be hosting provincial party leaders at the Halifax Marriott Harbourfront Hotel to present their party’s platform and engage with the Nova Scotian business community. The event will be moderated by Ifeanyi Emesih and is hosted in partnership with the Atlantic Chamber of Commerce and Chambers across Nova Scotia.
The event will provide Candidates an opportunity to present, engage, and network with local business and community leaders while also discussing the most important issues impacting businesses across Nova Scotia. The discussion will highlight the importance of collaboration between the business community and the provincial government in fostering economic growth and community development.

Meet the Leaders:
HON. TIM HOUSTONTim Houston is Nova Scotia’s 30th Premier.
Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Tim was raised in a military family and grew up on military bases in Summerside, PEI, Trenton, Ontario and Comox, British Columbia before the family ultimately returned to Nova Scotia for his father’s retirement posting to Shearwater. First and foremost, Tim is a dad. He and his wife, Carol, have been married since 1995 and have two children, Paget and Zachary.
Tim attended Saint Mary’s University where he obtained a Bachelor of Commerce. He then earned his Chartered Accountant designation in Halifax. After graduation, he and Carol moved to Bermuda where he worked with both Deloitte and in the reinsurance industry. In 2007, knowing that they wanted to raise their children closer to their extended family, Carol and Tim returned to Nova Scotia and have lived in Pictou County ever since. On November 2, 2020, Tim was awarded his profession’s highest mark of distinction, the Fellow (FCPA) designation, by Chartered Professional Accountants of Nova Scotia.
Tim’s love of this province and its people — and discussions in hockey rinks — sparked his interest in politics. He successfully sought the Pictou East PC nomination in 2012 and was first elected to the Nova Scotia House of Assembly in the 2013 provincial election. He was re-elected in 2017 and again in 2021. In 2018, Tim was elected Leader of the PC Party of Nova Scotia. Tim was sworn in as premier on August 31, 2021. Premier Houston also serves as Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs and Trade.
CLAUDIA CHENDERClaudia Chender is the leader of the Nova Scotia NDP and MLA for Dartmouth South.
Claudia is a passionate community advocate and leader who believes in making life better for all Nova Scotians. She is working to build a province where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
She was first elected in 2017 and, before becoming Leader of the NSNDP, served as House Leader and Caucus spokesperson for Education, Justice, Status of Women, Economic Development, and Natural Resources and Renewables. She is the fourth woman to lead the NSNDP, carrying on the legacy of Maureen MacDonald, Helen MacDonald, and Alexa McDonough.
Claudia’s passion for social justice drove her to study law at the University of Victoria. Since then, she’s brought her wealth of knowledge and experience to both the not-for-profit and private sectors, working in business and publishing before running for office.
Claudia lives in the beautiful City of Lakes, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia with her three busy teens, husband Jamie, and their dog Digby.
ZACH CHURCHILLZach has dedicated his career to public service and has held some of the most consequential portfolios during his time in government. As Leader of the Nova Scotia Liberal Party, Zach is committed to cutting taxes so working families can save an average of $3,000 each year, building 40 collaborative care units to ensure people have access to healthcare closer to home, and stopping Tim Houston’s efforts to double Nove Scotia's population.
He has served as Minister of Health, Education, Municipal Affairs, and Natural Resources. As Minister of Education, Zach introduced Nova Scotia’s historic pre-primary program, which transformed the landscape for hardworking families. He also hired hundreds of additional teachers, inclusive education specialists, and non-teaching staff to support students in our classrooms. Zach oversaw the implementation of Nova Scotia’s successful vaccine program and expanded access to primary care through the first pilot of VirtualCareNS. He established the first Office of Mental Health and Addictions and expanded cancer care options for patients in Nova Scotia.
Zach is a dedicated and passionate advocate for Nova Scotia. He currently lives in Yarmouth with Katie, an optometrist and small business owner, and their two young daughters, Cecelia and Eva.
